A few years ago a friend of my daughter's told me I reminded her of someone from a movie.
I was kind of flattered, wondering who it might be.
As a bit of a movie buff, I took delight in the potential persona.
Of course the whole conversation didn't take long, but in my head it was .. Extended.
Here's a few questions I asked and potential suggestions I came up with:
Is she tough?
Kinda.
Karen Silkwood, the investigator at a nuclear power plant. Tough, no nonsense, direct. Sounds like me?
Annie Porter, the bus driving chick from Speed. Sensible, tough and brave, plus Keanu.
Trinity - but not from the third matrix. Kick butt, tough and indispensable. Um.. And Keanu.
Princess Leia - c'mon you knew I'd say her. Royal turned rebel, soft spot for a bad boy.
Ripley - from Alien.
Wonder which of these works.. Hang on I'll narrow it a bit more.
Is she funny?
Yeah definitely.
(Fist pump)
Gracie Hart, Miss Congeniality. Sarcastic, klutzy.
Private Benjamin ... Just funny.
Pretty much any Drew Barrymore role
Sister Mary Clarence from sister act?
Bridget Jones - verbally klutzy.
M'yeah..nah...more information....
Is she nice to people?
Yep. Yes she is.
Sally Albright from when Harry met Sally. Not for that scene, just because she's the quintessential girl next door urging that men and women can just be friends. Plus I'd like meg Ryan's hair..
Summer Finn, indie free spirit from 500 days of summer. (Maybe 30 years ago on a good day)
Amelie - rapturous joy from this lovely gentle character. I can't speak French so maybe not.
Mary Poppins. Practically perfect in every way. Of course.
Still no closer.
Is she a mum?
Yes.
Peg Boggs - the 'mum' to Edward Scissorhands.
Lorraine McFly - Marty's mum in back to the future.
Mrs incredible - flexible, funny, smart.
Bren MacGuff, Juno's stepmother. Even though she named the next child liberty belle, and was fixated on dogs, she was a good mum. (When she ripped into the ultrasound tech? Yess.)
So with all these names in mind, I was surprised - then not - by her answer.
Can you guess?
Someone with all those attributes?
C'mon have a guess...
It was actually someone I do like as a book and movie character; someone who made me smile.
It was..
Molly Weasley (Ron's mum) from the Harry Potter series.
Yes yes she's a witch which was my first reaction - then I wondered if they had used the Monty Python method of determining her witch-ness and whether it therefore counted or not. Apparently this had nothing the do with the comparison made (phew) but more her general character minus the witch-ness.
She knits Harry a 'Weasley" jumper for Christmas after finding out he won't be getting a gift, she loves her prankster twins to bits, and chews her kids out when they deserve it.
She doesn't care how she looks or dresses, she fights to the death for her kids (even the death of bellatrix) is loyal to her husband and has a happy messy house.
She is a bit of a square peg and doesn't care who knows it.
Yes I see the trend here.
Thank you to my daughter's friend who made this comparison .. I can't think of any movie character I'd really rather be.
